Are they ready?

Post by Hatchet »

I was wondering what kind of accuracy you would like to see from a new crossbow hunter before you send them out deer hunting. We are set up to hunt our own back forty this year with 20-30 yard shots being the norm. Most hunts will be from blinds with a good rest.
Thanks

A 3D target will let you know what the maximum distance the new hunter can achieve. If you are going to be in the blind with them, you can run the range finder, or mark off trees in several directions inside that range. Good Luck! Be Safe! Have Fun! ENJOY! Passing on your joy, and knowledge then watching the success of your student is the top of the game in my opinion!

....excellent response Dan....however, the "tried and true" apple on one's head would show how well they act under pressure.... and the teacher's ability to stay still as the arrow heads for the apple on his head....just saying!

My wife says she likes Anthony's idea better than the 3d target. If you dont hear from me again you'll know they shoot as good as I do.
Honestly though I have been wanting a 3d target for a while. Looks like now I can get one. "Dear we must get one of these...for the children".

Just get a paper one, and tape it over the bag! Some of the 3D targets are a sumbitch to pull arrows out of, and they ain’t cheap either.

With a new hunter, and I don't know if you mean kids or adults but either way, I have taken a few guys out to shoot and I am more concerned with the safety and form than accuracy. Not saying it's not important, of course it absolutely is. But it's just so easy to injure yourself with these new bows.
My personal opinion would be that they need to fit the mold of the entire package. Must be able to accurately hit the target repeatable at the maximum distance, understand and use the equipment efficiently and safely, which would also include the stand and or any other equipment they would be using. Two season ago I sighted in a bow with a buddy and he cut the string with the Broadhead not once, but twice in the same shooting session. So to me, there's so much more than just accuracy to drill in there.

But to answer directly, if the equipment out of the box is good for 1/2 at 30y, most people can reliably hit 3" and call it "dead nuts". Their words lol, not mine. The smallest little bit of practise can drop that to 2" which is plenty good for deer hunting.

I agree with janesy. When I worked at Bass Pro, I found most people were pretty accurate , even first time shooters. Most needed more time about shooting safely. I don't know if your talking about first time hunters or just new to crossbows. If first time hunters, they need to try to shoot a few times under pressure. I remember the first time deer walked out on me during my first time hunting. If I had a chance to shoot, I don't think I could have hit an elephant. I think I had the shakes for 30 minutes!Might just be me but learning to stay calm is just as important to stay accurate. Way back then, for a fewtimes, I even went for a jog and came back to shoot my bow just to see what would happen. I think I found out I'm just goofy! I do have a friend that had a 3D doe target and would get kill shots every time. Put horns on it and couldn't hit it to save his life.

Thats why I got an Excalibur. After seeing every mishap that could happen to a crossbow, didn't take me long to figure it out. In all my ten years there, I never had a call about a problem , let alone to send a crossbow back for warranty work. I can' t say that about any other one out there.

As others have said...accuracy is only 1 component. When that new hunter sees that first animal, Adrenalin will be pumping. You won't really know until then how they can handle it. BUT...if they practice a lot and can keep arrow holes touching at 20yds, then they will have more confidence in the woods. To me, these bows should all be same hole accurate at 20 yds...with several different arrows with broad-heads. If not, then I'd look at the arrows and try to improve them. Start them out shooting 1 arrow over and over. That should definitely be hitting the same hole. When they master that, shoot all of the arrows you plan to hunt with to make sure ALL are the same. Then try them all with broad-heads to verify your hunting setup. Obviously if you shoot multiple arrows at the target, and you are same hole accurate, don't shoot at the same bullseye.
