I usually look for Leupold on Ebay. I usually buy used because they have an Excalibur type warranty, to whom ever owns the optic. I have gotten some really nice Leupold's that way over the years.

Also try Shopgoodwill.com. People donate all kinds of good stuff and the money you purchase with goes to a good cause.

It is also tax deductible.

Jeff, just a suggestion. Take a good hard look at Steiner. I have Steiners, Leica and one pair of Swarovski minis. I’ve had Leupolds before they they don’t measure up to the binos I use now. I don’t know if things have changed but it used to be that Leupold dis not use BAK 4 prisims which I am told make or break the quality of binocular performance. My wife bought the Leicas for my birthday and are are just stupid money and I would never have spent the money. The Swarovski binoculars are minis which are pretty expensive but they have their limitations. One thing I’ve learned is the the better the optics, the lower the magnification need which allows for better low light vision. I have a pair of 7X50 Military Marine and 10X50 Nighthunters and later is marginally better at seeing at distance but are no match for the 7X50s in low light.

I recently picked up a pair of Redfield 10x42 for around $160. that are great for the gun range, and deer hunting / scouting. That said, if you are planning to get great views 200 plus yards, follow Don's advice, and get the best you can afford. I have checked out some higher end stuff, and there really is value there, I just don't use that level of performance for what I'm doing.

Right you are Dan! Much of what goes into your decision is what you need or expect. A good pair of binoculars are keepers so always buy your last one.

everyone,
thanks for your input!
at the moment i am considering the bk-5 santiam hd 10x50's from leupold. but will check out these other brands, mentioned it has nothing to do with far distances. where i hunt here in michigan there are antler point restrictions and i am trying to help my below average eyesight see more details so i can see/count small points. i am a meat hunter and don't wanna miss out on filling the freezer just because i cannot count the points

I broke down years back and bought a Swarovski EL 8.5x42 binocular. It was hard on the pocket but in my opinion was the best money I ever spent on hunting equipment. Buy once, cry once.

Nice Robert! I wish I could bring myself to buy optics like that! It's always my wife that buys the expensive stuff that I want but am a bit too cheap to buy. But your little diddy "buy once, cry once" could not ring more true. My wife always says to me to buy the good stuff so she doesn't have to listen to me bitch! If I had what I own now, I would not have bought and given away Leupolds, Nikons, Bushnells, Bushnell Elites etc. What a waste of money because I got cheap!   BTW, I'm on my 3rd compact tractor but fortunately my first wife! :eusa-dance: :eusa-dance: :eusa-dance:

Look at the Steiner Military Marine. It will be well within your budget. They are different from conventional binos. There is no center focus. You adjust to each eye and general distance, your eyes do the rest which is better than a center focus in low light. As always, if you can't put a pair of binoculars to your face and check them out, don't buy them.
