I’m shooting my dads old 1950s Carvotta Brothers Blackhawk now. This Timberhawk should be an improvement.

Re: My Next Toy
Yeah that’s about where I’m at now. Easton Traditions arrows with 100gr up front with a 170 gr Zwickey No Mercy head. Should be able to use the same arrows. Spine should still be ok. Takes me about 30 min to sharpen one side of the Zwickey to a shaving sharp single bevel.

Re: My Next Toy
I really loved the recurves l had several black widows.
My favorite was a wapiti made by jk Chastain in Colorado. And a few Robertson stykbows.
My poundage was always #60.
Once l got away from the slapping of the recurves and went to the modern "semi recurve longbow" l started killing a lot more deer and more accurately because they stopped jumping the string.
The longbow was night n day quieter and the deer never heard it as with the recurves.
If you hunt with both you will also see this too. As said l love the recurves but l eventually left them behind because of this problem.
10 yards is not do much of a problem but 20 yards is.
At 200 fps you need a quiet bow.
I enjoyed 35 years killing deer with my stickbows. A ton of fun .l still shoot mine in the yard every chance l get.
My shoulder has improved and l will hunt again with it.
I found the crossbow to be very fun also.
Its all good fun traditional archery is very cool.
Don't know now but l have found the martin savanna to be as good as any longbow made even bows twice as expensive. I ended up with 3 of them .lol.
When you find the right recurve or longbow....you will know l was never a wood arrow guy...too much agrivation ..easton aluminum all the way with big 4 fletch 5 inch banana feathers and a big 3 blade snuffer or a Simmons intercepter .
I hope its lucky for you keith.

Re: My Next Toy
I missed a nice doe this year at 20 so far with the Blackhawk. Shot under her and she didn't move. They came in quick and I was more facing her than turned sideways and so I figure my draw was short. I'm having a ton of fun and learning new stuff all the time. I have killed 5 deer this year so far with the crossbow, so I hope to spend more time in the woods with it now. It's 53# at 28" and I draw about 27". I'm backing down to 48# on the Timberhawk so my shoulders and elbow can handle it better. I doubt I'll even see a speed drop off between the 2 as the Timberhawk is a more efficient design. Just shooting in the backyard is great on it's own. And yeah, I have no plans to go with cedar arrows. The Traditions have a wood grain look and come with 4" feathers...but as usual...I plan to get the stuff for my fletcher and to start doing my own arrows, etc. 5" feathers seems to be the ticket. I probably won't even get the bow until early in the year, so I have plenty of time to dial it in before next deer season.
I will look into the longbows though. Never really thought of the string slap on a recurve vs longbow. Thanks for all the info!

Nice!
I know at least one person will be upset calling it a toy though.

Right! I meant my "critical piece of hunting gear that is an absolute necessity without which I would not be able to pursue game".

Re: My Next Toy
For some reason l never shot off the "shelf" like the purists.
I always used a simple old school hoyt plastic pro rest.
Always got better flight than a leather set up.
It also allowed me to us the good old fashioned quick loc time tested arrow holder...that things the bomb for a hunter.
