Cease fire wouldn't fire - the solution

Post by DuckHunt »

This week I broke out both of my crossbows just to knock off the dust and test a new chronograph. My Matrix 350 shooting a 402gr arrow had a 12 shot average of 337.1fps with a Standard Deviation of 0.8fps. It can consistently hit a dime at 20 yards. My last shot was broadhead (boltcutter) into a 3" circle at 60 yards. That bow always impresses me.

My Wolverine 360 had a 10 shot average of 310.8 fps (Std Dev 2.6) when shooting a 469 gr arrow. As I was getting ready to shoot one of my last shots with a broadhead, my Wolverine wouldn't shoot. It was cocked and loaded, I took the safety off, but the trigger wouldn't pull or release the arrow. I removed the arrow and reseated it. No change. I removed the arrow, tried cocking it again making sure it was pulled fully back. Then I put the arrow back on and seated the Beacon nock until it clicked. Took it off safe and pulled the trigger, nothing. It wouldn't pull. I swapped in another arrow, and twang, it shot fine. I looked over the offending arrow and noticed the issue. The plastic part of the Beacon nock wasn't fully pressed down into the aluminum insert. There was a gap of a little over 1/8". Unless you looked closely, you wouldn't notice it. The arrow seated fine and even clicked into place like everything was normal, but it wouldn't shoot. Once I pressed the nock in fully, everything worked as it should.

Just something to keep in mind if you are using the Beacon nocks and you are using arrow pullers out near the nock. I'll add this to the list of things to check on an arrow before I load it while I'm in my tree stand.

Good eye, I'll pass that tip along

It took me 1.5 hrs + to install, inspect and test 78 Beacon nocks in today on arrows cut at 16.5" and 18"

Out of 250+ Beacons installed thus far not one has failed inspection.
