Turkey Sighting
Turkey Sighting
I hadn't seen many turkeys around for a while until today.I was driving over to the farm equipment dealers about a mile and a half away. About half way over I saw some black things 2 fields over from the road. If there was one there must have been a hundred turkeys just strolling along feeding on something.I stopped and watched them for a few minutes. On my way home I looked for them again but they had moved on.This happened between 4:15 and 4:40 this pm. What a thrill to see so many turkeys and so close to my place. Makes me a little anxious for the season to begin. I may try a few bow hunts this season.

Bow Hunting Turkeys
Your a lucky guy!
We are not allowed to hunt Turkeys where I live because we are North of the line, so to speak.
I would like to try for old Tom with my bow this year, problem is that it is a minimum 45 minute drive to legal hunting and a lot of the Northern properties that can be hunted, get pressure to be hunted by guys who live North of the line.
Last year we hunted some county forest near Hillsdale which is almost two hours. Made for a long day when you could only hunt till noon. The trip was worth it in the long run.
This year the trip will be easier with the all day hunt!
Would sure be nice to hunt them in the back forty!
Good Fortune to ya'.

my favorite friction type call is glass with a plastic striker...off hand i think it is a PRIMOS call. even when it gets wet from dew or rain i can still make it sound good.---------STEELecoaster wrote:Anyone know of a good call to start with. A sporting goods store down the road is clearing out all hunting gear. I bought a box call and a mouth call, but the mouth call is tough!!!! I like the slates, but they didn't have any.

Keep practicing with the mouth call.. it takes time, but you will get it,, I use a mouth call and a Box call... If you are having trouble with the excess Material on the mouth call ( Gag reflex) try trimming some off with a good pair of scissors,, thats what I did and it made a big difference..ecoaster wrote:Anyone know of a good call to start with. I was driving around Sherman's Point this pm and spotted a flock of turkeys on Kaiser's farm. I was coming from Napanee and saw them just as I came onto the first cleared fields. They were up near a large shed like building and apparently feeding in the corn stubble. Probably a pretty good turkey spot during the season.
The turkeys that I mentioned in my first post were apparently feeding on an old soybean field. I saw them 2 days in a row and haven't seen them since.Sure hope that I see some of them during the season.

After a good day of ice fishing with Ecoaster on Saturday, we went to do some turkey scouting. In one field we counted 20 deer, in the same field there were 20 turkey feeding right along with the deer. We decided to see how close we could walk towards the deer just to see how they would react. It took awhile for them to notice us, then they flagged running right past/through the group of turkeys. The turkeys just kept on feeding.
Although unsafe during deer season I wonder if one was to dress up as a deer for turkey would that work? You might not even need a firearm, just walk up to them and grab them around the neck.
