BUSTED!!!

Post by huntman »

Was out this morning to a new property that i just received permmision to hunt. After only scouting the area once before i figured i would sit on the edge of a freshly cut soya bean field. My objective was to sit on the ground with a pair of binoculars and of course the mag and see where the deer where traveling before putting out a ladder stand. At about 6:30 i heard alot if movement in the bush towards my right the wind not really in my favour but no bad. After a few minutes i could see movement infront of me about 50 yards all i could really make out was the white under the neck. It was defentaly a deer!! He stood there for about 5 minutes and then began to snort! Not once but somewhere in the neighbour hood of ten to twelve times, he then ran into the bush snorting away. After 10 mins he returned again and stopped again and snorted. This has never happened to me before i have heard deer snort but never that many times and never return for a second sniff. Need less to say no deer in a 2 mile radius was gonna come anywhere close to me after that!!! HAs this ever happen to anyone before>? I mean continuos snorting?   :!:

I had a doe "blow" at me for 15 minutes straight last season...never had that before...I guess she saw me in my treestand 35 yards away but maybe she could not smell me....I wish she would have come in shooting range, we don't need mama's, teaching their little ones such behaviour.

Huntman,

Next time a deer snorts at you, snort right back at it. It it replies, you reply again and so on. Sometimes the deer will come in for better look. Usually it means the deer senses something is not right but it has not totally made you. You have nothing to lose and may get a shot.

I have not had achance to do this in a hunting situation yet, but I have called back several deer this way in the off-season.

Sounds like he was pointing you out, to the rest of the population. When hunting, I've been told to scare those ones away.....so others will come

I've had deer snort at me like that, upwards of 20 times(snorts) one time I had a deer snort at me about 50 times!!!!

If they are standing still and snorting chances are they have not smelled you but have seen or heard something suspicious. I have had luck grunting them in after. Especially in heavy cover, where thy hear or see you but don't know what you are, try a grunt and you become just another deer. Last year I had three deer come in together under the same circumstances, only to be busted at seven yards.

I had a doe catch me standing up in my ground blind yesterday, she must not have known what I was because she stood there snorting at me and stomping her foot for a good 3 minutes, I was able to bend over and pick up my crossbow and put an arrow into her before she ran off, in this case curiousity killed the doe. First deer with an arrow too!

I agree with the snorting back. Many times the snort, and the stamping of the foot is to get a reaction when they aren't sure what it is that's disturbing them. If you snort back it often relaxes them.

Last year i was walking to my stand and stumbled within 10 yards of a medium sized 8 pointer. He snorted and stomped, and i did the same, it did calm him down but he always kept an eye on me. It wasn't until I tried to hide in some tall grass that he finally took off.
