Luck, Skill or A Lot of Both?

Post by alces »

We went to Thunder Bay in Sept for the moose hunt but because of truck problems we arrived a half day late. Our friend, who lives in Thunder Bay that we hook up with, decided to go out that morning on his own (he had his own tag).

He did his first call just before shooting time and got an immediate response. At first light, he set up on a small hill in a cut up from the bush and called again. The bull started to grunt and crash through the bush in his direction. In no time it came out into the cut and was working its way in his diretion. When he first saw the bull he knew it was huge - at least 50 Inches. He got low, to stay behind what little cover there was in the cut. Just as the bull was closing in on shooting distance, he heard a noise to his right. Glancing over, he saw another, bigger bull coming up the hill he's on. He pivoted to his right, to get a better angle on this new bull, when it saw him move and it came right at him. It didn't pull up until it was 4 yards away from him. He brought up his Excalibur Vixen and let him have it. The moose never made it back to the tree line before crashing to the ground. When he stood up to head down to one he shot, the first bull started to come right at him. Even with him shouting at it, it still got close enough for him to throw rocks at it before turning and heading back towards the bush. Before he made it half way to the downed moose the first one turned and came right back at him again, getting close enough for him to hit it with rocks again, before finally disappearing back into the woods.

When we finally pulled in at noon, he had cleaned the moose and got it back to camp by himself.

In all the years we have been going to Thunder Bay this guy always gets his moose. He gets to spends more time in the bush in a year than most of us get to in a decade. Even though we didn't get there in time to help out with the work, we were sure glad we got there in time to help him celebrate.

Our quick measurement had him at just over 60 inches.

I don't know how to post pictures on here yet but hear is the link
