european mount

Post by terry-1 »

Here is a nice buck taken at my Farm by a close friend who had not bagged a buck for several years. We set up in a two man ladder stand on a spot I had seen this buck and a few other nice bucks a few days before. About 45minutes before dark 3 big bucks cam out this one walked right into archery range and he made a perfect shot the buck ran 50 yards and piled up right in the middle of a small clearing. The two other bucks never blinked and ended up getting into a fight about 100 yards away for 15 minutes it was very cool to watch both were bigger than this buck. Several does walked right up to the dead buck and just keep feeding and never spooked a bit. I went back three straight evenings hopeing to bag one of the two bigger bucks but never saw another deer at that spot.I sent another friend to the spot he bagged a buck that had 14pts not a gaint maybe a 4 year old buck very nice buck though. I am in the process of doing the skull mount on it also should be done this week. My luck has not been that great seems where ever I sit the bucks stay out of range I am hopeing with the rut going full blast the next few weeks I will get my turn and get to do one of my own european mounts for a change. This mount turned out very nice I think after doingt 5 skull mounts the last two years I am figureing out the tricks now. Image

Here is a few important things to know when doing a european mount. First be sure to remove all the meat you can from the skull and lower jaw this makes boiling much faster. After about 1-2 hrs of skinning and cleaning the skull I boil for about 2-3 hrs takeing time about every 30minutes to scrape loose meat away.next I remove the skull and use the water hose to clean loose meat out of the nasel area and brain. I then bring a fresh pot of water to boil add skull and about 32-46 oz's of common household 3% Hydrogen peroxide which bleaches the skull some and also eats away at meat you can't reach in the nasel/brain area and cleans the rest of the skull also. I do this for about 45 minutes to a hr and them remove skull and let dry. I let set a few days for the skull to dry out and then glue the teeth in with super glue or they will fall out after a few weeks(learned that last year). Next I cover the antlers in Allum Foil and I paint the skull with several light layers of high grade expoy gloss white paint form walmart(very small 4-6oz spray can high grade paint) The reason I paint is my old taxidermist told be the skull will yellow over time no matter how good you bleach it out. With a high grade paint the finish is so smooth it looks like I dipped the skull in plastic it really looks great much better than a plain bleaching and it will last for years just wipe it clean of dust with a damp cloth time to time to make it look new again. I have done 5 so far this way and I hate to say they look better than the ones I paid to have done but I don't do 150 mounts a year so I am sure I take more time than a taxidermist does. I have several people asking for me to do theirs now that they have seen the ones I did. It's really pretty easy you just have to try one yourself to see first hand. I will never wait months and pay to have one done again! Here is this mount and a buck I killed and skull mount same way last year. Both bucks came from my farm you can tell the look alot like antler shape wise. Image

european mount

Those are nicely done. I've tried the boiling and maturation (sp?) techniques, but could never get all the "snot" out of the nasal cavities. I won't claim this is as nice, but I've done a "modified european" mount that looks pretty good and is a lot easier to do. Just cut the top half of the head off, peel away the hide, then chuck a steel brush in a powerdrill and remove the flesh and membrane. I'll try to post a photo:

I also spray painted the skulls white, and sprayed the antlers with polyurethane.

nasel

Post by terry-1 »

The nasel meat is hard to get out I get 98% of it but you still have alittle between the back of the nasel area and the brain. The HP eats most of that away and bleaches it to the point it just dries up and does not stink or smell. It has no affect on the mount since it is out of sight and dries up hard like bone in a week or so. Before you boil the seond time with HP it is alot worse looking and more of it.
