Things are heating up ...

Post by R.J. »

I'm still under restrictions from the Doctor .... can't drive , climb , shoot etc. But can still get out to scout and walk ...

A couple buddies picked me up for a drive to Cabela's on Tuesday .... I didn't take the camera  what a mistake ..... saw a beauty buck boundary marking and rubbing trees approx 80 yards off of the 402 .... 8:30 am , good light but no camera

We noticed quite a few deer out early during the drive . We crossed the border over to Michigan and when we returned from Cabela's we counted 31 roadkill deer from Cabela's to the Port Huron border crossing back to Canada . talked to a couple guys in Michigan and they said the bucks were already chasing .....

Well that was two days ago ..... I couldn't go with the guy's this am .... so my wife drove me to a spot where I watch a local herd and compare what they are doing to what is going on with the rut .... ( they are in an area of no hunting ) .

I never realized there was a back field that the deer had access to .... The place is closed to the public at this time of year .... I was looking into the bush when I saw movement from the cedar swamp up into the field ..... started with a large 10 point following a doe .... licking his nose as he trailed her ... then 1 by 1 the whole herd came up into the field ..... I managed to get 4 good shots before they spooked back into the cedars ..... the large 10 point was obviously starting to swell up and he ckecked me out before following the others ....

The whole encounter lasted approx 10 mins .... what a great photo opportunity ....

Thought you guys would like those shots ....

Leonk : Yep it's the neck .... C1,C2,C3,C4 discs slippping forward pinching the nerves that control the blood supply to the brain and optic nerves amoungst other things .... that explains the blurred vision and dizzy spells ... Doctor and Neurologist are scheduling an MRI before they decide a plan of action .... my hunting buddies have already volunteered to do some field surgery ... but I took a pass !

It's been a real pain , since it limits my activities .... I will be missing my anual Pelee Island hunt next week as well  1st time in many , many years ... Hope to get sorted out in the next couple of weeks ??

For now , I can still get out for light walking and scouting .... will take the camera when I can ...

TYE It is Cabela's in Michigan ....

The gist of the post was a field report We have been seeing some evidence of secondary rubs and boundary scrapes as well as chasing since our road trip 2 days ago ..... guys in my group were out this a.m. CH took a small buck that was rubbing trees right below his position .... VA , and Isis saw doe's with a buck in tow approx. 10:30 am .... They also saw a buck walking the edge of a field , and another buck crossing the lake flats from one area to another during early afternoon .... so when we see bucks out of cover during odd hours we take note for refrence of the rut .

The deer that I took pictures of today ... seemed to be displaying prerut behavior ..... seems a little early for hard chasing , but the bucks above seem to be swelling up ..... just got to keep an eye on things as events heat up to try to pin point the peak of the rut .

What are you guys seeing ? .... Might be OK for some light spar rattling this weekend ?
