I caught him with the help of my straw hat, after I got him outside he sat in my hand for a few seconds, then he flew to the nearest branch and scolded me like I did something to him, cool little birds
Little GIRL. They are definitely a treat. We have gone through as much as 80 lbs of sugar per summer feeding em.
If they ever get in your garage and won't fly out, don't chase them. They get overheated quickly and die. Just hand a feeder off the open door and leave. They will be attracted to the feeder (have to feed incessantly during the day) and leave when they see the great outdoors.
I had one fly up and land on the feeder as I was taking it down to clean/fill it the other evening. I couldn't do anything but stand there and hold the feeder until it finally decided to fly off.
I love the humingbirds that come to my feeders. I keep track of when they arrive each year and for the last 4 years they have arrived with in 4 days from the previous years. They are by far my favorite wildlife to watch and enjoy. Right now I beleive I have one male and two females at my feeder. But it is hard to tell. I am glad you could help the little girl out. Surprisingly they are very friendly and are not to afraid of you that much.
This a cool site as well. http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html
...We followed one from our feeder to a nearby tree that it frequently visited after hitting my feeder. Got a pair of binocs and actually found its nest!...so small!....about 1 or 2 inches maybe...made out of spider webs and a leaf. They are cool birds for sure!
I have 2 feeders, because they fight. I watched two of them straffing one another one day. The victor went to the feeder and the loser flew in at high speed and crashed into him. I heard the whack. It was suprisingly intense.
Montezuma supposedly ate roasted hummingbird tongues. I suppose it is similar in flavor to roast manatee and eagle egg omelets and breast of blue heron.
