does string thickness and serving size matter

Post by Masboy »

i shoot mostly 2114,2117 arrows and shot an excel string for along time and with .026 angle majestic an .030 halo and no problem with any arrows shot with it.then I went to a fastflight string and still shot great but I just felt it was a little less forgiving then tryed some maxima hunters kv that were 22 inches long and had poor accuracy with them and the serving was hitting them low off center and they were like a dryfire a couple times with the arrow going a few feet. so put on an old excel string with .026 angel serving an still accuracy was poor.I gave the arrows to my son after I had no luck with them even fletched with my Arizona bolt and blazers .he shot them from his equinox with an excel string served with.030 halo an they shotgreat . then he was doing great but needed his serving redone and I seen he had a broken strand so gave him my fastflight string with the .026 angel serving and the kv hunters shot poorly from his bow and I tryed them again with my vortex and a astroflight string with the .036 angel serving and they shot great. the thicker strings seem more forgiving to me. so from my shooting with the thin strings a center of the nock hit is a must and best with all strings and all size arrows.

String & center servin dia. does matter! Anytime you use a string thats below the center you have a greater chance of semi dryfire n poor accuracy. Factory Fast flite isn't a thick string so the center servin is thicker.

my fastflight string looks really thin and the serving not very thick with the angel majestic .026 on the string. I have a good tight serving on it now and think I will go over top of that serving with another serving to make it fit the center of the knock and see how they shoot then and how two servings work. don,t guess it will hurt anything ?????? I,ve tryed worse things!!!!

Well you can update us on the double servin after shootin it abit. I think the Fast flite has 24 strands so its as small as can be used but really .030 center servin goes a long way fer centering string on arrows. Myself not bein a speed minded person have mostly used thicker strings, i have several 40 stranded one's that are the Cats Meow!

I will let you no how it does. I also am a fan of the thicker strings . I just went to the fastflight Flemish string because it held up so much better than the excel string for all the shooting I do.now after shooting this 32 strand astroflight boo string with .036 angel majestic I,m impressed with it and it,s holding up great! I,m just trying to get my sons bow back on track with the kv arrows so he can hunt with it till he gets a new string.I feel better experimenting with someone elses bow anyway!!! just kidding!

Try taking the Dynaflight string and twist the string to your preferred brace height. Measure the served diameter with a vernier. Remove the serving. The back off the string 6 turns or so and serve it with 0.036" Angel Majesty (lay the first length of serving on the string and serve over top if it) and see if you have the string diameter increase you are looking for. Correct me if I am wrong but you are looking for small gains.
When you use a small diameter string to push a large diameter arrow you push on the bottom quadrant of the rear nock. That gives the front of the arrow a bit of lift so the duration of guidance is diminished. Ideally you want to run a ball cutter in the groove of the main frame and use a smaller diameter arrow so that the center of the arrow is pushed by the center of the string.
I wish I had the time and money to experiment but some day I'll send one of my rails out to be cut to lower the arrow in the main frame. It would be just for fun because we know these bows are more accurate than most shooters and the improvement in accuracy is really only measurable by nit pickers.

I,m just tinkering and seen them shoot great from his bow and don,t see why they won,t do good with the fastflight if I get the serving hitting them in the center.I also want to shoot them some more from my vortex and see how they do with broadheads compared to my heavy foc super slams.I know they say there weight forward but my other son said he checked them compared to his regular arrows and they balanced out about the same place so I will be checking that to see.I love these arrows if I can get them to shoot great.thanks for the ideal! now back to the shop for some tinkering today!

I put another serving of .026 angel majestic over the other serving on the fastflight string and it looks great and hits about dead center on the kv arrow nocks and my son shot it at 50yds and was shooting great around 1-1/2 groups and was real happy and sighted in and ready to hunt with it and his rage.he doesn,t hunt with it a lot because of the noise he says.I put my S5 on it for him and it made a big difference in the twang on the equinox compared to what it did on my vortex. I tested the kv hunters again in my vortex in the wind today and the best I could get with the 22 inch arrows was 3 inches at 50yds.I thought about cutting some down to 20 inches and then trying them but my slams are shooting great an figure if it ain,t broke don,t fix it. long as they shoot good for him that's fine with me!
