Deer attractants

Post by hockeyfodder »

Anyone out there have a recipe for an attractant similar to the product Deer Cane.
I'd like to mix some up and give it a try.
Thanks

Deer Cane is essentially just salt(primary ingredient), baking soda, and flavour.

So you can buy a bag of water softener salt (50lbs for 4$), some baking soda and a few tins of apple juice and go to town.

Deer caine works good for me. At my brother's urging I decided to try a home-made mineral mix, the recipe is widely available on the web. Basically it's one part stock or feed salt, two parts red trace mineral salt, and one part dicalcium phosphate. I got 200 lbs of ingredients for about $53. I'm also mixing grape koolaid in with it, sometimes I put a couple packs of dry mix in with the minerals, the last time I mixed some up in gallon jugs and poured it on the minerals after I spread them out. The deer are ripping it up!
First pic is hard to see in the shadows but this lick is a new one I started maybe 6 weeks ago, I kicked some leaves out of the way and poured it right on the ground. I've put the mineral mix on it 3 times, it's now about 3 feet around and about a foot deep at the deepest part, they've actually got a trail worn down to the dirt going to it.

This is an existing lick I started 2 years ago with nothing but deer cain, I've put the mineral mix on it 3 times same as the new lick I started. It's bigger every time I look at it. They're hitting this one harder than the other one. I am topping each lick of with just a dash of deer cain for good measure.

This is the same hole 6 weeks ago, you can see how much deeper it is.
