will constant disassembling damage my xbow?

Post by supermurrao »

hi , all

now the disposable bolts problem were solved, my next problem is how to transport my vortex during my travels, by car or backpaking.

i know that fiberglass bows shouldnt be left stringed inside closed cars because of temperature.

but how about to disassemble my vortex every weekend to transport it inside a soft case on my car backseat?

i mean, there is any problem associated with weekly assembling and disassembling of my vortex to transport it ? will this procedure cause any harm to my xbow structure, precision, screws, etc?

in my first test, everything gone alright, even the scope kept its zero.

but i am a little afraid of future effects of this practice over its structure.

and i do prefer to transport it disassembled because it is easy to transport and less people keep looking me while i am around.

ah! one more question!

any hint about soft cases?
i like maxpedition rifle case design but i dislike its weight, bulkness and price.
i m searching for something simpler, like a thin, soft bag with 2 compartments, where i can put the two parts ( bow and stock) of my xbow and then carry it on my shoulder, folding the bag and keeping it inside my backpack when not in use.

thanks!

-shadowzone tac bracket ( just quiver and flashlight).
-blackhawk pivoting long bipod.
-rope cocking, S5 supressors and... a camo sling to carry it all.

I'm unsure what you're referring to when you say disassemble? Please clarify what you mean.

If you're talking about removing limbs from the riser, and riser from mainframe then chances are you'll be stripping fastener heads eventually. If you're talking about unstringing the bow and unscrewing the two mainframe bolts I say go ahead. Do you have A/C in your car? If you do it's not like leaving your bow in an oven. Use common sense and you'll be fine.

I carry my Vortex and my M330 in my car strung up and in one piece. Just lay the bow on the backseat. Fits in a Honda Accord with no problems at all.

Murrao, I also don't see any problems separating the riser from the mainframe, Just like said when removing just make sure you have a nice tight wrench so you don't strip the heads, and you should be fine. That's really all that can go wrong. And if so you shouldn't have to much trouble replacing the bolts. Good Luck...

Taking down your Excalibur by removing the 2 mainframe to riser 5/16" countersunk screws will not affect your Vortex in any way or change your POI during travel. One can assemble or disassemble any Excalibur under one minute using a 5/16" Allen key, (3/8" for the Micro).

The Cabelas Ice Fishing rod holder is the perfect size while being discreet. Included are two internal padded divided pockets for your stock/mainframe and the other pocket for your riser/limb/stirrup assembly. Three zipped side pockets are perfect for your quiver and any extra's. In December these were on sale for $27. :D

Just like bubba said, there should be no problem seperating the two pieces.

Many years ago we had a forum member named Digger (has since passed on) that brought this method to the forefront as a method to transport the crossbows. He did it for many years without any problems.

A few words of caution I need to say. If your not careful, you can damage the bolts. But bolts are not to difficult to replace. Also, remember a strung bow in a car (cars can heat up fast in the sun) left parked for a short while can cause damage.

hi all!

i like to transport it disassembled because i like to stay low profile, in a "gray man" style.

doesnt like people know i have guns, i like to shoot, etc.

ok, if i can disassemble the xbow with no harms, i would like to ask what is the correct number of the L wrench used to do this.

my xbow was exposed in the store front end and it came with no tools.

i am using a cheap chinese tool to disassemble ( no number on it) and i would like to buy a reputable brand wrench to preserve the screws heads.
whats the correct number of wrench to dismantle the 2 main bolts?

ah, any hint on soft cases?

Normous answered these questions. 5/16" Allen key, get a quality set. I recommend the Cabelas bag he suggested too, I'd just verify that your EXO series limbs attached to the riser would fit before ordering.

hi all!

thanks for the input!!
its good to know that i can disassemble it with no problem.

and the rod case idea was very good! thank you! i will search something in this way!

i would like to make a new question.

as i said, my xbow came with no tools.

beside a 5/16" Allen key to deal with the riser screws, what is the number of other keys i will need to have to (eventually) deal with the rest of screws?
this way i can buy good keys for all screws.

i mean, beside the riser bolts there are the S5, Limbs, trigger, scope, etc screws, each one will need a specific key that i dont have.

does anyone know the correct number of each needed key for a vortex model?

again, thanks so much!

I ONLY use a high quality set of Wiha Allen Key wrenches that are produced in Germany. Nothing is more frustrating that feeling cheap Chinese Allen wrenches round out when removing screws from your favorite Excalibur or other Man Toys.
Beware of the high cost of using inexpensive Chinese tools.
The Wiha standard set is recommended.

I have wondered the same thing about wearing the threads out in the aluminum mainframe when I remove the riser. I have been thinking about installing two stainless studs in the mainframe bolt holes so they remain in place then all you would remove is two nuts from the studs to remove the riser. When/if the studs start to wear then they would be easily removed only one time to be replaced saving wear and tear on the mainframe aluminum holes. Just a thought.
