How Do You Make Titanium Bolts Black?

Post by StormDragon »

Hi,

I just got some titanium bolts to replace the ones in my Munch Mount and was wondering if there is a way to either paint them black or a simple procedure I could do to turn them black.

I want to replace the existing ones on my Micro too but wanted to see how the mount went/looked first.

And although lighter weight wise, the shiny bolts def contradict the black of both the mount and eventually the black nightmare finish of the bow.

Thanks in advance

You could easily prep the surface, tape off the threads and Allen key holes and paint the surface flat black paint. Curing the paint in an oven will additionally harden the finish.

Or, what I did on my Blackout Matrix 380 and 405 was to use 3M Carbon Fiber wrap material and cover the titanium bolt surface. I bought a 5' x 2' section locally for $20 and use it on anything I want to wrap in a CF look.

Thanks and I was reading on a few sites that paint will come off over time when applied to titanium. Will putting it in the oven stop this and what temperature for how long?

I will also look up the tape but I like the idea of flat paint to go with the Micro finish

You can paint titanium so long as you condition it with an acid-based primer. Cleaning and prep is also very important! I am thinking that an oven cure at 180 for 20 to 30 minutes may contribute to the adhesion qualities.

Would this work and then flat over it with an oven cure? Or just the etch and flat?

My choice would to etch, flat then cure if I was choosing the paint route. Choosing the 3M 1080 CF wrap was my best and easiest option after researching how to paint titanium.

That's stuff I use to prime my aluminum boat but I'm not sure if I'd use it on expensive fasteners though...
