Reducing scent
So with my fall bear hunting season coming up, how can I on the cheap remain scent free or reduced. I am thinking a Rubbermaid with a battery ozone producer, and all of the sprays. I'm also thinking dirt in the box, cedar, pine. But at the same time I think it'll smell moldy. Looking for some diy tips. I quit bow hunting deer years ago and have been waterfowl hunting for years. I've seen more deer duck hunting than I have rifle season. I'm guessing waders do something to help with that, I've had some very close encounters in them in waders vs my rifle gear. I'm on a low budget so if I need to take a mud bath I will. I bought some burly boots, I usually use icemans I had since 1994. Thanks guys, can't wait to shwack a bear with my 350

Re: Reducing scent
X 2 on the scent killer . The only thing l do differently is store my leafy ghillie top in a duffle bag full of leaves and goldenrod (native leaves) and wear it on top. Dial hydro fresh hair and body soap is by far the best odor eliminating body soap l have used. The dial body soap/scent killer /leafy suite in leaves is just killer for me, the best system l have ever used .l rarely get smelled upon anymore.

Re: Reducing scent
I don't have any experience bear hunting but for deer I like taking an unscented trash bag and put my hunting clothes in it along with fresh pine needles if I am hunting an area with pine trees. I will leave them in the bag about a week before hunting.

Re: Reducing scent
I have been Bear hunting a few times and I do use the Sent Killer Gold also, but I hang my clothes outside and then what ever the vegetation is in the area I will rub some that from the ground. One thing I also used and had to problem with is Thermacell. I used the regular one. Now I see they have a earth scent one out now if there are going to be black flies and mosquitoes. I have had Bears around me and they seemed not to be worry about my scent. Good luck.

Re: Reducing scent
IMO we as hunters over think this scent thing. Here is a video I just put up on the effects of using a LP gas heater in your ground blind, when crossbow hunting and keeping warm......http://bit.ly/2FZ7bFV
These deer got behind the blind, downwind, and fed and did not spook, from smelling the gas heater or me.

You can wash your clothes in machine with a cap full of Pine-Sol. Store in scent free container full of charcoal. We use a Dead Down Wind spray, soap and deodorant. I hunt deer in a ground blind at 20 yards or less and never had a problem with them smelling me.
Re: Reducing scent
I'd like to add one thing---- what ever species I've hunted, . I can usually find the crap piles.
I'll immediately step in it and use their natural scent . the fresher the better!
In yrs past even taking my cap and rub it in the crap pile.
In areas where there is a lot of cattle - yep step in that too. LOL
while sitting in a stand -i'll pick the pine needles/ leaves and rub on cap - sleeves- pant legs
for yrs I've always washed my hunting clothes in plain baking soda - then put in the gaint ziplock bags and squeeese out all the air.

I've had great success with wildlife research products also. My son watched me bump a doe on the nose with my stirrup. Many close encounters using it.elkaholic wrote: ↑Sun Mar 18, 2018 12:25 amI personally can't say enough about this product- other than it has worked for me.

Re: Reducing scent
I bathe in Ivory soap and wear clean clothes. Pass there I simply play the wind and have rarely been busted over the past 56 years of hunting. Humans stink no matter what they do to cover it up unless they are no longer breathing so play the wind.

Great tips guys think I'll use a little bit of everyone's advise
Re: Reducing scent
I steal a pair of women's nylons from one of my daughters or g/f, and stuff the foot of the nylons with cedar branches. Then I wring it a couple times which release the cedars strong smelling oils, and throw it in a big garbage bag with my hunting cloths. it last a loooong time, every time you want more cedar scent, you simply wring it again.
I also step in cow patties. The cows walk all through the woods where I hunt, it makes great cover scent. When I was staying closer to the barn, I'd hang my jacket and pants in the barn with the cows over night. I'd have deer walk litterly a couple feet from me, and never get busted.

Re: Reducing scent
I use Atsko or DeadDownWind to wash my hunting clothing once it is dry I put them in one of those space bags and get all the air out. Store them like that until hunting season. If possible wait or one of those good downpours and hand them up outside in the woods while it rains. Let them dry and back in the space bag until the hunt. Get dressed where I park the truck; spray down with DDW scent elimination spray before walking to the stand and then again when I arrive. Next year I plan to make my own cover scent spray using the dirt and leaves from the areas I hunt.
