My first shotgun hunt, opening day.
Went to a property I have never stepped foot on before, with my Father in law, brothers in law and our three sons.
Our boys stuck to our sides as we walked field edges and bushes, the whole time I was floored at how noisy you can actually be while hunting like that.
I had no tags, my tag was filled on the archery opener so we were hunting of my brother in laws tags, they had one each.
On our last bush of the day before taking an evening stand I stood alone at a bush corner waiting for the pushers to drive around the concession to shake up the woods. My Father in law went around the back of the bush at the road to keep anything from crossing the road. Before they even got out of their truck I had three deer cross the field in a hurry and freeze up at the edge of the bush, 80 yards away. I crouched down, laid my crosshairs on the biggest doe and she dropped like a rock. The buck that was with her went in to a full run, at about 100 yards I lined up on him and dropped him too.
I felt kinda bad about ending everyones hunting week so fast, but the agreement was to shoot what we could, when it was over, it would be over.
If they wanted to hunt all week they should have known better then to bring me..
Not sure if I will participate in another shotgun hunt, I have never seen the goal of a hunt as a kill at the end of the day. Plus, it was an odd feeling tramping through the bush that I normally try to be so stealthy hunting around.
I also got myself a monster scope kiss, time to find a shotgun scope with more than 1/2" eye relief..
A big cudos to those who let me hunt with them!
My Buck, a very symetrical 8 point.
My doe, with my son.

Re: My first shotgun hunt, opening day.
Sounds like a fun hunt, especially for you. Nice 8 too. Sounds kind of like deer hunting with dogs around here. Used to have fun dog hunting with friends, but much different from stand hunting and I haven't done it in about 10 years.
Last year I was hunting with 2 buddies and we could get 3 does. Had the same understanding. One of the guys shot 3 times and sent a text message that the hunt was over. It was all good.
I got a nice little scope eye with a 30-06 I had years ago because I had to turn way around and shoot from an awkward possition. Killed the deer but was scared of that gun after that and have had a flinching problem ever since.

Re: My first shotgun hunt, opening day.
Nice job David. I am tagless as well after my archery season & am strictly party hunting with friends that invite me to hunt with them.
But hey what are friends for & it's great to share some fine Venison with good friends regardless of who pulled the trigger!!

A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Nice shooting David. Way to fill those tags.

Way to go, David! CONGRATS!
Now you have the rest of the week to butcher.
Great that you all had your boys along - awesome!
