Broadhead for Kodiak Bear
I have a Matrix 380 and I don't feel confident that the bolt cutter will doo the job. I upgraded the bolts to 20 inch Zombie Slayers with brass inserts. Total grain weight is 320 without the broadhead. Do any of you guys/gals have recommendations for a broadhead that that will put a monster bear in its place? My shot will be around 40 yards.

Re: Broadhead for Kodiak Bear
The boltcutter would be at the top of my list heavy tough n accurare. I use spitfires for deer and love em to death . But i wouldnt use em for bear. I know the boltcutter is shy on cutting dia. But you need penitration maby look at 175 slick tricks or montecs all good stuff.

Welcome to the forum! I personally wouldn't hesitate to use the boltcutters on Grizz. I have taken three black bears with them and none went farther than 60 yards.Shot placement is everything when it comes to bears.

I'm sure the Bolt cutters will do the job, but look at the Slick Trick Line as well they have some really great broadheads. I love the Grizztricks they fly well and open up really nice holes in everything I've shot. Good luck with your choice they're is a lot of good choices out there.

Been Bear Hunting (lots of Bears) for many years.
I would use a 125 Slicktrick Magnum on a Grizz. And I wouldn't hesitate or think twice!
Giant hole, power for bone, and nice accuracy out to 40 yds. and further.
But would use a heavy arrow, strong spined, good quality like Zombies.

Re: Broadhead for Kodiak Bear
My choice would be a 3 blade VPA 175 grain COC, the only thing I would consider for any dangerous game. There are a number of broadheads that work, but I want the best. This is a 525 grain setup with a 20" arrow @ 327 fps, @ 20 yards into a rhinehart crossbow brute broadhead target. As you can see it got full penetration,,, "not once,, but twice". It was the only broadhead out of four from 150 to 175 grain to do it. This was in spots that were not previously shot.

Re: Broadhead for Kodiak Bear
I was going to recommend the VPA also. You can't beat the toughness of the head and great flight plus the blades hold an edge better going through bone like ribs than any other head I know of including Slick Tricks....

Really? Here's a pic of an offside rib cut in two w/ a Slick on a 1000# cow buff......B-head had minor damage to one of the 4 blades......

Re: Broadhead for Kodiak Bear
I also prefer the VPA when the going gets tough.
I prefer a "cut on contact" fixed blade and I think you can get a 150 gn. 3 blade either vented or non-vented w/ 1 1/8" diameter cut.. Myself , I would choose the non-vented as I feel they may be a bit stronger and quieter.
While shooting trad bows on a past Alaskan hunt, I put a 250 gn w/ 1 1/4" dia cut screwed onto a G/T 5575 through a bear and found it 15 feet beyond with a 58# recurve at about 27 yards.
Not being able to readily find VPA's my back-up pick would be the "cut on contact" G5 Montec 125 stainless fixed blade... Perhaps you can get their Carbon steel 3 blades a bit sharper but stainless does not rust in the type of weather you may experience while way up north....
Have fun !! I'm thinking your going to have the hunt of a lifetime.
Good luck, Gene

Re: Broadhead for Kodiak Bear
I envy your upcoming adventure. It sounds exciting and fun, and by all means I wish you good luck...
If you are looking for a tough cut on contact head, check out the Simmons Landshark broadheads.. They have models that go all the way up to 205 grains and they cut a massive hole. They come solid and vented and use bleeder blades to give you a 4 blade cut if you chose to use them. They fly great out of my Micro at 316 fps. They are easy to re-sharpen with a file or stone too..

X2 on the Simmons broadheads. Also check out the Centaur broadheads. Both are huge tough COC broadheads.
