OT: A Magical Moment
Not my usual rough & tumble redneck type of post...
I have always had a fascination for Hummingbirds.
We run four feeders nonstop through the summer, and two (rotated out daily) all winter long as well.
Endless hours of entertainment watching these amazing little jet fighters!!
All time stands still for me when they get close.
Our dog is the same, instantly freezing and watching quietly until they depart.
Yesterday I was checking out a few newly sprouted plants in one of our container gardens when I heard to whirrrrr of those quick little wings rather close.
Slowly looked up and there was a Ruby Throated Male hovering about six feet away, and staring intently right at me:
Very Cool I thought!
Suddenly the little bugger swooped right in on me, I mean Point Blank!
Zipped right up to my face, then gave a swift long tongued lick to my bottom lip!
Startled me so much I jumped backwards like I was being attacked by an enraged grizzly!!
My Lady watching this little incident was almost peeing herself laughing so hard!
Little bugger gave you a kiss she managed to get out between gales of laughter.
And Man, did that EVER scare you!!
Yep. It did.
Funny how something weighing in mere ounces can pull off what a 500 pound black bear can't in terms of shock & awe!
Never in my wildest dreams...
Magic.
Cheers,
Nog

Tuff guys love nature! You gotta problem with that? I love anything I can see out in nature, no matter where I am.

They are great little creatures. That’s a great story, not many people have experienced that type of interaction.
Over here in NB we have the Ruby throated as well. They show up here as soon as the maple trees crack their buds. I believe they are taking maple syrup from the buds. We put our feeders out at that time. I’m quite sure the Ruby Throated are the only Hummingbird here in the east.

Don't blame you for being scared. Might not have been that reaction if your wife wasn't watching

The wife attributes the happening to a dribble of fine rum lingering on my lips...
Good possibility!

Ha! I’ll bet it’s a plot by the CCP to spread the Chinese virus to the rural areas! That little bugger has been brainwashed and trained to kiss big, burly men and quickly inject him with the wuhan bat flu! Kill all the commie little bastards you see and spread the word on social media so we can nip this dastardly scheme in the bud!

Re: OT: A Magical Moment
Wish I could find a the photo. We always had hummingbird wars going on around our feeders at the cabin , in n. Az.
It was usually none stop action.
Sometimes get 2 or 3 at a time at feeder.
The magic moment.
6 all sitting and getting a drink at once.
Guess they were all just too worn out. to try and chase each other away anymore. Had time to take a pic.

Been waiting for the hummingbirds to return.
It’s usually within one day of the same date every year, which is may 4th.
Lov your pics
